With the popularity of 2020’s Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction Collection, prices have soared as people try to complete their collections. Unfortunately, this desirability has also led to an increase in fakes. When purchasing Main Attraction Ears, there are a few things to know and be aware of.
Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction Ears will always come with the long fabric tag (pictured above) and NOT the rectangular “Disney Parks” tag (pictured below). This is true no matter whether the ears were initially purchased from shopDisney, US Disney Parks/Disney Stores, Shanghai, or Hong Kong. Recently, ears have started popping up on resale sites featuring the sideways sewn “Disney Parks” tag. While that tag was used on ears in 2020, the tag was retired at the end of 2020 and was never used on Main Attraction Ears.
Authentic Main Attraction Ears ALWAYS have the long, skinny shopDisney tag. Recently, though, even the skinny tags have been faked – or at least the wrong tags are being used as shopDisney tags have changed in the last year. In the picture below, the authentic and correct tag is on the right. The tag on the left is on the newest version of the fakes. Also notice that the smaller “new material only” tag sewn behind the long tag is also different.
Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction ears were sold in the United States on shopDisney, at Disney Parks, and in Disney Stores, in Shanghai, and in Hong Kong. Because of this, there is often confusion on which hang tags are appropriate. The ears from the US and Shanghai both feature the Main Attraction Card. Main Attraction Cards also feature a semi-glossy appearance.
The Main Attraction Ears purchased from Shanghai will NEVER have a tag that says “BASED ON THE “Winnie the Pooh” WORKS BY A.A. MILNE AND E.H. SHEPARD” with a code of 400060185240 and a price of 129. This is a fake tag regularly placed on many different fake ears.
Fake tag used on many fake ears. This tag is NOT used in Shanghai or in any other park.
The Main Attraction Ears purchased in Hong Kong do not have a Main Attraction card, but they do have the same long skinny card and a Hong Kong Disneyland price tag (picture 2 above).
Authentic and fake Minnie Mouse: The Main Attraction Ears tend to be very similar, though the fake ears are generally lesser in quality. This may vary in fabric or in overall quality of the ears. Each of the faked ears feature something different from their authentic counterparts.
Because the Space Mountain Ears are the most expensive and newest fakes (that are also selling for significant prices), it is important to know and be able to spot the differences. Here is the bow and Space Mountain Charm on an authentic pair of ears.
There are a few things to notice about the authentic ears. First, notice on the left side of the bow, there is a Hidden Mickey. Notice the location and position. Authentic Space Mountain Ears will feature the Hidden Mickey in that same general location. Even if the Hidden Mickey is on the ears, if it is in another location it is likely not authentic (in this case look for other possible red flags like tags). On the right side of the bow, though this is not always present in the same way on every authentic pair, there is a brighter “starlight” in the center. The newest fakes now feature Hidden Mickeys in the correct spot, but they are much smaller. There is also a second “twin” Hidden Mickey on the right side that should not be there. The Space Mountain Charm is also nicely painted and not sloppy on the authentic pairs. Also, the color of the ears is slightly the different with the authentic ears being a slightly champagne and silver and the fakes being white and silver. Many of the fakes floating around not only have fake tags, but also have bows that are not exact. They do feature the same (or similar) fabric, but it is not precisely sewn to feature the Hidden Mickey on the left side.
Big Thunder Mountain
The Big Thunder Mountain Ears have a few less noticeable details to differentiate authentic ears from fakes. There is a small difference in the bow fabric on the fake ears and also a slightly sloppier quality in sewing. These are very minor differences, but something to keep in mind when purchasing any ears.
Peter Pan’s Flight
Fake Peter Pan’s Flight Ears, while generally having the Main Attraction Card and long shopDisney fabric tag, have a few noticeable differences. The first major difference is the bow. The authentic ears feature a dark shadows while the fake ears have a fainter, almost unnoticeable shadow. Another difference is in the stars on the right ear. Authentic Peter Pan’s Flight Ears have stars in white sequins while the fakes have stars that appear to be more silver or painted. While it is difficult to tell in pictures, fakes tend to have a duller, less glossy Main Attraction Card as well.
King Arthur’s Carousel
King Arthur’s Carousel fakes have even less noticeable differences. The fake ears tend to have lesser quality in the fabric with “chipping” on the gold, though, the authentic fabric has also been known to have those issues. The fake ears may also have issues such as fabric being sewn sideways on the ear. While it is difficult to tell in pictures, fakes tend to have a duller, less glossy Main Attraction Card as well.
Having said all of this, it is worth noting that there is nothing wrong with purchasing “fake” or “factory seconds” Main Attraction Ears. These ears can be a cost effective way of finishing a collection or a great alternative for wearing to the parks if you are afraid of removing the tags and wearing your authentic pairs. If you only want authentic ears, though, these are the things to be aware of. With the cost of some fakes soaring to closer to authentic prices (I’m looking at you Space Mountain), it is important to know these details. Lastly, if you purposely want to purchase a pair of fake Main Attraction Ears, definitely check on eBay for ears from China because they are much more affordable than what some people are selling them for on other sites.
